Headed to Hepper Hill Woods again tonight for another steady run in drier but still humid conditions. Found a couple of tracks I had not ran on before. Another enjoyable 5 miles.

‘Twas on the ninth of June…….

Yes it’s that time of year again and nearly 5000 runners toed the start line on Newcastle’s Quayside last night. As the Blaydon Race, held since 1981, celebrated Geordie culture by running as close as possible to the route described in Geordie Ridley’s 1862 iconic song,The Blaydon Races. I probably started a little to near the front for my current fitness level but not close enough to see the leaders steam off ahead. However I maintained a steady pace and accepted the fact that there were plenty of faster runners who wouldn’t be staying behind me for long. Having suffered a cold wind blowing down the Tyne as we waited for the start, conditions didn’t seem to bad as we got underway and Gateshead’s Calum Johnson scorched to a 27.45 victory for the 5.9 mile course. Morpeth Harriers completed the podium finishers with Carl Avery (28.17) and Finn Brodie (28.19). The women’s race was won by Sale Harrier, Sonia Samuels (31.31). First one back

After a couple of weeks of easy jogging and steady running every other day, I decided to take the bull by the horns and see what state of fitness I am really in. So headed off down to the track at Chester - le - Street. I like the track at the Riverside, it is located on the banks of the River Wear,next door to Durham County Cricket Club and overlooked by the 14th Century Lumley Castle (now a hotel). As for the running I decided not to be too ambitious and plumped for 3 x 1000m with 2.30 recovery. It was a fine sunny evening with only a slight breeze and temperatures hovering around 9C. So all in all pretty ideal conditions. As expected I found the session rather a struggle but I managed it and although legs were aching later in the evening there was no adverse reaction from recent back and knee problems. So that's the first real session in and now I can start moving forward again - Happy days! For the record, the times for the efforts (and they were an effort) were 3.37; 3.41; 3....

Endure 24 - Leeds

There was no magnificent sunrise to greet Sunday morning, rather the sun stealthily lit up a weak and watery sky. I had resorted to listening to music, something I never normally do, to keep me going. However, it wasn’t John Lennon’s ‘Whatever gets you through the Night’ but Klut’s Asham with which I welcomed the new day. This was my third attempt as a solo runner at the Leeds Endure 24 hour trail race. Although I felt flat at the start of the race I settled in well as the field set off on the first 5 mile loop around Bramham Park Everything was going well and by midnight I was slightly ahead of my schedule to run 20 laps over the 24 hours. Then suddenly it all unraveled as a planned 20 minute break suddenly turned into an hour, then 2 hours. I was cold, wet and tired and my sleeping bag was so inviting. however as the rain started once again I got back out on the course. I was going to miss my target but couldn’t just give up and finished on 13 laps, placing me 153 out of 2...
