As I write this I am keeping a 'weather eye' on the Live stream of Kilian Jornet's attempt on the 24 hour track record in Norway. Conditions are quite rough with the temprature at -4 Centigrade at the start of the race and currently 0 Centigrade, just over an hour into the attempt.
It is some record that he has to beat too. Set in 1997 by Yannis Kouros it currently stands at 188.590 miles. that is an average pace of 7.38 minutes per mile for 24 hours! Jornet has gone off hard this morning and if he keeps up his current pace he is projected to complete 207.2 miles!
The attempt is sponsored by Salomon to promote their Phantasm light weight racing shoe which will be released in Spring 2021 and follows on the heels of other shoe company sponsred record attempts such as those by Hoka and probably most notabily the first sub 2 hour marathon which was spnsored by Nike. As this attempt on the 24 hour record also includes a number of Norwegian ultra runners any record breaking will be official.
Runners will switch direction every four hours.
I will be making my first attempt at a solo 24 hour race in July next year, Covid permitting. The event in Leeds had been due to take place this year but was forced to postpone due to the pandemic. If you look back over previous posts you will see that I have done the 24 hour twice previously as a team of two with my sister. On both occasions we did 105 miles, with me doing 65 miles on the first occasion and 60 on the second. Coincidently, Catherine, my sister will also be making her first solo
attempt.
